A Not So Famous Recipe for Boozy Butterbeer

And a Bit of Background

I haven’t uploaded a YouTube video in three years. It’s true, I looked it up. Yet, as my laptop struggled through the effort of running Adobe Premiere, I realized I make a video in the exact same way I always have. I decide it’s time. I sit in front of the camera and wing it. I chop the footage up into pieces as small as I can make them, the School of Jump Cuts taught me well. All of a sudden it’s 2009 again and I’m sitting in front of the family computer, filming my vlog via the webcam as fast as possible before anyone else comes home to disturb my quiet set. Except this time it’s a camera that was more expensive than my laptop that I have not, in two years, taken the time to learn how to use. Also, my roommates are home, sitting right out of frame, offering commentary and acting as production assistants.

The subject of this video? A Butterbeer recipe I’ve been perfecting over the last five-ish years. Well, that’s not necessarily true. Up until a year-ish ago I thought it was perfect. A sugary, boozy treat for nerds in need. Then I offered to make it for some coworkers at their annual Fourth of July party, which I had never attended but was promised to be the shindig of the year. When pressed on my recipe, I told them all about it… and they thought it sounded too sweet. I suppose it was a bit overwhelming, but I knew that would be an easy fix. Then another one asked if it had foam on top like the one at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I told them no, but the seed had been planted. It was off to the grocery store and home to do the only thing a truly inexperienced home bartender can do, mix together some shit and hope for the best.

Thus this recipe was born. While I only had an hour or so to drop by the big party before heading to my Grandma’s house for some family fun (don’t worry, it was equally boozy), I had to go show off my new and improved cocktail. It turned out to be a crowd pleaser and I counted the boozy treat as a win. I promised the recipe to everyone! I bragged about it on my podcast, in true millennial fashion!! I… forgot the recipe? Well, at least the particulars of it, I knew what I needed but not how much of what went where. Then, over time and many new cider discoveries, I lost interest.

This past weekend I took it upon my quarantined self to test the recipe out, retool it, and bring it to the masses!

What You’ll Need:

Vodka
Whipped Cream Vodka
Butterscotch Liquor
Cool Whip
Caramel Syrup
Club Soda
Cream Soda

Shot Glass
1/2 Cup
1 Teaspoon
A Bowl
A Glass
A Fork

Now, I’m going to type out the instructions right here, but if you’d like a bit more entertainment with your dry list of instructions, I’d recommend the video version you see right there below all the boring words.

Step one: Put 1.5 cups of Cool Whip, 1 Tablespoon of Caramel Syrup, 1/2 a shot of Butterscotch Liquor, and 1/2 a shot of Whipped Cream Vodka in the bowl. Stir together with the fork. Place in refrigerator.

Step two: Put 1 shot of Vodka, 1/2 shot of Butterscotch Liquor, and 1/2 shot of Whipped Cream Vodka in your glass. Fill glass to halfway mark with Club Soda. Fill the rest with Cream Soda. Stir.

Step Three: Put some of the foam you made on top of the beverage you made and voila!

Want it sweeter? Use Whipped Cream Vodka instead of regular Vodka and/or skip the Club Soda.
